Annual sports day is another resounding success
Round-up THIS year’s Allianz Cumann na mBunscol sports day took place in Charlesland Sport and Recreation Park, Greystones on Wednesday, June 8.
There was a fantastic turnout and schools represented were Delgany, Gaelscoil na Clocha Liath, Gaelscoil Ui Cheadaigh, Holy Rosary, Wicklow, Kilcoole, Kilmac, Newtown, Rathdrum Boys, St. Brigid’s, St. Cronan’s, St. Fergal’s, St. Laurence’s Greystones, Roundwood, St. Mary’s and Gerard’s Enniskerry, St. Pat’s, Wicklow, Our Lady’s Rathdrum, Scoil Chualann, St. Peter’s, St. Francis’ Newcastle, Ashford, St. Patrick’s Bray, Gaelscoil na Lochanna, Greystones Educate Together, St. Brigid’s Manor Kilbride, St. Kevin’s, Bray School Project, St Pat’s Bearna Chlé and Curtlestown.
The day began with a parade around the track with each school displaying their banner and wearing their schools colours with pride.
Cathaoirleach, Jim O’Riordan, did a fine job of MC on the day and kept every event ticking along nicely. Boys and girls took part in individual races, team relays, tug of war, ball throw, long puck, long kick and long jump.
Each boy and girl represented their school impeccably and it was a fantastic achievement for each athlete to be representing their school.
Thanks to the race starters and finishers, those who helped line the children up, field event co-ordinators, those on the results table and all who helped out in anyway to make the day the success it was.
This day could not take place without huge input from volunteering teachers, parents, past pupils, and Teresa Kinnane and the staff in Charlesland. To all of those Allianz Cumann na mBunscol, Cill Mhantáin are indebted.
Most importantly well done to each and every child who took part in the events.
The level of sportsmanship displayed on the day was truly remarkable. Children could be seen shaking hands at the end of events, congratulating each other on the podium and helping each other out.
This lovely atmosphere of sportsmanship was a credit to them and their schools. Results to follow. Teacher GAA Summer Course - It is hoped to run a Teacher GAA Summer Course in Scoil Chonglais Baltinglass from July 4 to 6. This course is being run by the Education Centre Kildare and the GAA.
This course will be very helpful to teachers who are involved with GAA activities in their school. Currently we have eight teachers signed up to the course but we need between 15 and 25 teachers to run this course.
It is hoped that schools in the area would do their best to get representation on this course as it will compliment the huge amount of work you all do with GAA in your schools. If you have any questions in relation to this course please do not hesitate to contact Paul Garrigan on 083 4366801.
Please see details on the course below.
Blended Learning Summer Course - Three days face to face (July 4-6) and eight hours on-line. This GAA Teacher Summer Course is a new blended course being using the Association’s new Learning and Development Community Portal. The face-to-face element runs over three days face-to-face and approximately eight hours on online modules to be completed thereafter.
Being largely practical-based, it aims to introduce teachers to Gaelic games - hurling, Gaelic football, camogie, ladies Gaelic football, handball and rounders. The main objective of the courses is the advancement of teachers’ pedagogical, teaching, learning and management skills in the context of the primary school physical education (PE) curriculum. Courses are organised by Local Education Centre’s under the remit of the Department of Education and Skills.
The courses are delivered by GAA Games Development staff and tutors. Furthermore participants will develop the ability to delivery elements of the PE curriculum through the medium of Gaelic games.
An emphasis on numeracy and literacy programmes highlight the opportunity to integrate PE through a teaching curriculum by using the various resources developed by the GAA.
