Young stars shine brightly

THE Glendalough Hotel Wicklow Community Games track and field finals were held in Shillelagh last weekend. Rathdrum pipe band lead the parade.

Best Turned Out award winner went to Roundwood who just shaded it ahead of Enniskerry.

Children from Westside, Aughrim/Annacurra and Baltinglass read the pledge in English and Irish and torch lap of the track.

The Ann McLoughlin award which is presented for outstanding service to Community Games was presented by her father Tony to Fiona Shannon from Aughrim/Annacurra. All in Community Games send get well wishes Bridget Mc Loughlin who is unwell.

Next year Community Games will be celebrating their Jubilee Year. 50 years is a long time to be involved in any organisation. Wicklow’s Life President Lily Kavanagh ( Enniskerry) one of the founder members of the games in our county is still going strong. Lily in her address welcomed, praised and thanked all who was involved in the games and had words of encouragement for the children.

The track got under way with the U6 Girls and Boys (County). As we all know at times it’s hard to get them all to run together stop-start tears but as usual they are the stars of the day and the Fiona Brittons of the future. It was then down to business of the day winning the gold medal to get to the National Finals in Athlone in August.

The heavy shower before the break did not dampen the spirit of the children as there were thrilling and some close finishes which had the Finishing Judges on their toes.

The day ended with the Adult Fun Relay which was won by Roundwood and last year’s winners Shillelagh having to settle for 2nd Place.

Newly elected T.D Pat Casey of Glendalough Hotel, our main sponsor for the last 15 years, was on hand to present medals to the winners. Pat congratulated all on the running of the games and wished all the children the best of luck in Athlone in August. U-12 100m Claudia Manley, Westside.
