CARNEW 2 GLENCORMAC 0

THE Under-12 Group 4 Shield final between Carnew and Glencormac took place in sunny Allen Park, Aughrim, on Saturday last.

Carnew kicked off and were moving the ball very well and completed 12 passes and got a corner in first minute.

The resulting corner was whipped in by Dan Redmond and deflected off a defender and ended in the net for a dream start for Carnew.

The Carnew side continued to pass the ball well and got another corner in the sixth minute. Ben Gilligan swung it in this time and Jack Keogh’s shot was blocked and then Dan Redmond’s shot was blocked by the keeper and the unlucky defender tried to clear but finished to his own net.

For the remainder of the half it was a fierce battle with between both sides with Glencormac creating three good chances but failing to penetrate the Carnew backline.

Carnew keeper Roland was in good form while Will Molloy, Conor Nevill, and Shane Byrne were solid at the back while also getting a bit of luck to keep Glencormac out. Half-time 2-0. The second half was a very close with both sides fighting for every ball.

The Carnew midfield of Jack Keogh, Dan Redmond, Lucy Kemple, and Richard Greene were working hard for the team.

Midway through the half, Glencormac hit the crossbar and the ball fell into Roland’s arms.

At the other end, Aaron Fitzpatrick’s driving run through the middle brought a good save from the Glens keeper, and, with minutes remaining,

Carnew thought they scored again when Daniel Wright played in Ben Gilligan who twisted and turned and his shot hit the back post and came back into keeper’s arms.

Maurice Shiels, returning from injury, held the ball up well when introduced. Final score: 2-0 Carnew captain Ben Gilligan lifted the shield to complete the league and shield double to the delight of the supporters.
