Sending out an SOS Strikers need to turn draws into wins

- DANIEL GORMAN Sports Reporter

HARRY KENNY is sending out an SOS to his strikers. He is calling on them to turn draws into victories. Two successive 0-0 draws have left Kenny satisfied but six points would have left him purring and he believes an in-form striker would fuel those triumphs.

As it is, Kenny celebrated his appointment on a permanent basis by climbing off the foot of the table following their stalemate against Sligo Rovers.

“I was very pleased with it. Just before the break we had another 0-0 against Longford in which I thought we deserved the win but I’m very pleased with another clean sheet because we hadn’t been keeping them recently.

“I thought we were the better team. Definitely. I changed the system around (4-3-3) a little bit and went into the game, got settled, played well, passed it well and I thought we created the clearer chances. They had one or two half-chances which Peter dealt with comfortably enough but overall we created more chances than they did.”

Kenny already had plans to pick up a few signings in July but the departure of Robbie Creevy has made his desire a necessity.

“Robbie was a big enough player for us. It was very disappointing to lose him but you have to appreciate what he wanted to do.

“The window is around the corner and we have to look to try and strengthen because we’re a little thin on the ground now, particularly in midfield.

“Maybe not (signed by) the next game but certainly for after that I’d like to think we’ll have one or two in.”

A striker may also be on the cards for Kenny because he knows how costly his side’s lack of goals are, especially in the last two outings. He’s hoping they might find their form and find the net on Saturday in a match which could have monumental implications for the rest of the season.

“Especially with the last two performances but you’re only getting a point from them which is a bit disappointing. A win on Saturday would help us go difference but they do have a better goal difference than us. The win would drag us closer to a few others as well. I’m looking forward to Saturday and hopefully getting the win but Wexford are doing well, they’re no mugs. They were beaten by a last-minute goal up in Dundalk and they played very well against Derry. They’ve been going very well.

“That’s what we need (goals). Over the last couple of games we have been creating the chances but we need one of the strikers kick-start and I’m sure when they do that we’ll be up and running. If we get one or two, we’ll be getting the three points.”
