The court heard that Maughan had a total of 20 previous conviction­s, eight of those for theft.

The court heard that he has had some difficulti­es in the past and used to play football for Dublin minors until he was injured.

‘No matter what hand you’re dealt in life, it doesn’t excuse this type of behaviour,’ said Judge John King.

‘He resisted arrest and fled the scene. To his credit he made admissions on interview, but he knew the jig was up at that stage.’

Judge King noted that the defendant was on bail at the time of the offences. ‘A custodial sentence is warranted,’ he said. For the two €800 thefts, he handed down fivemonth sentences, concurrent to each other, but consecutiv­e to a sentence he is currently serving.

For the Avoca Handweaver­s incident, he received a five-month sentence, suspended for two years from his release date on the new sentences, and subject to the condition that he come under the supervisio­n of the Probation Service, obey their directions, be of good behaviour, and not re-offend. The Heatons matter was taken into considerat­ion. TWO members of one of Ireland’s best loved bands will be performing a free gig in Bray next week.
