WICKLOW ROVERS

-

The senior ladies travelled to take on Mourne Celtic last week and unfortunately they lost out on a 3-1 scoreline. To say the girls were unlucky is an understatement. In a game where the girls were excellent they were undone by some strange decisions. The girls gave it everything but sometimes things outside your control go against you. Rachel “The Goal Machine “Bolger fired home the Rovers goal. Lucy McGettigan was excellent up front in the first half and continued to impress when she moved into the middle of the park.

Charmine Higgins was outstanding driving her team on with Chloe Brennan impressing on her return to action in her first game of the season. Hard luck girls but by all accounts every player gave a hundred percent and sooner or later you will get the rewards your efforts deserve.

Last week we had our second week of our annual soccer/fun camp, it was an amazing turn out with 140 kids taking part in week 2, everyone had a fantastic time.

Again the weather was very kind to us with the sun shining down every day. We had some potential stars of the future on show with the kids displaying great skills through out the week.

The club would like to thank all the kids who conducted themselves to the highest standard all week while having fun. A big thanks to the parents of the kids for your continuous support, it’s very much appreciated.

The club would like to say a big thanks to club president Anthony Earls and one of our junior managers Charlie Mitchell who were on hand every day over the two weeks of our summer camp to give a hand where needed.

Also a big thanks to Mandy O’Neill who looked after the ordering of gear while also helping throughout the two weeks when called on. Thanks to all our coaches for all their work over the duration of the camp. Thanks to Anne O’Neill who stepped in for the last two days at short notice. Thanks Mandy, Anne, Anthony, Charlie and all the coaches.

Due to popular demand and our highly successful summer football /fun camp the club have decided to hold an extra week before the kids head back to school. The camp will run from Monday 15th August to Friday 19th August in the Whitegates, it will run from 10am to 2pm daily. The camp is open to kids from 4 years old to 13 years old. Every participant will receive a ball and medal. The cost of the camp is €45.

Each participant should bring a packed lunch, drink, rain jacket, football boots and shin guards. For registration forms or further information please contact Johnny Dunne 087-7802098, Robbie Dover 087-3621049 or any committee member.

The senior men have resumed training in the last week in preparation for the upcoming 2016/17 season, training takes place in the Rocky Road every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7.15pm. Everyone welcome, present, past and new players welcome.

The club are currently selling FAI National draw tickets, we would ask all club members to make an effort to try and sell some tickets.

This could be a great fundraiser for the club if the members get behind it. Anyone interested in purchasing a ticket can contact any committee member or any club member. Full list of the prizes can be viewed on the club facebook page. Also anyone interested in selling some tickets for the club please contact any committee member.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coaches Johnny Dunne and Robbie Dover. The academy takes places on the all weather pitch on the club grounds at the Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish last season’s under 12A top goalscorer Conor Hunter a speedy recovery from a broken collar bone injury he suffered recently, we all hope your on the mend and back to full fitness soon and ready for the start of the new season, get well soon Conor.
