SWORD ATTACK ON TWO HORSES

Gardaí hunt culprit after animals left with sickening slash wounds

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

TWO horses received horrendous injuries in Ashford after they were attacked with a sword or machete in two separate incidents.

The first violent act occurred on the night Friday, July 15, while the second took place four days later on the night of Tuesday, July 19.

Both horses are under different ownership and were kept in fields separated by a narrow laneway off the main Ashford to Devil’s Glen Road.

There seems to be no obvious connection apart from that they were located in the same area.

The horses received extensive slash wounds across their bodies following the savage attacks.

The vet who treated both animals concluded that either a sword or machete type implement was used. Gardaí are appealing for assistance from the public.

TWO males who broke into a home in Wicklow town fled before they could steal a gun safe after being disturbed by the gardaí.

Last Friday, July 22, Wicklow Garda Station received a report of two males exiting a car and attempting to break into a home on the Glenview Road through the front door.

Gardaí quickly arrived on the scene and from a neighbouring garden witnessed two men fleeing through a series of back gardens before getting into a waiting vehicle and driving away at speed.

One of the males escaped from the house by jumping from a rear upstairs window, while the other intruder ran out the front door.

One of the men was wearing a grey hooded top and a pair of blue jeans. The other suspect had red hair and was dressed in a navy top.

The car they made good their escape in was a blue Ford Focus.

It appears that nothing was stolen during the attempted burglary but efforts had been made to break open a gun safe. The front door to the home had also been damaged.

Gardai also located a pair of socks in a nearby garden which they think the culprits used to cover up their hands during the burglary.

The incident occurred at around 11.50 a.m. and Gardai are appealing for any potential witnesses to contact them on (0404) 60140.

Last week a safe containing a shotgun and a rifle was stolen from a house in Rathdrum.
