ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES 1-18 AUGHRIM 0-02
FOR 55 minutes it looked very likely that Aughrim wouldn’t score in this match. It was 47 minutes before they even took a shot.
At half-time Éire Óg led by 1-13 to no score. This is the Wicklow Senior football championship but we’re getting results from an underage game.
It’s actually a pity Aughrim registered a score in this match because people will pass by this result whereas if there was no score, everybody would take note and then perhaps, just perhaps, something could be done.
There is something wrong when this can happen. It’s not entirely Aughrim’s fault, they’ve lost half a team in the last two years and their manager Trevor Doyle freely admits that a drop down to Intermediate may be best for the club.
And this wasn’t the only result where the margin of victory was 19 points – Baltinglass beat Newtown and St. Boden’s by the same amount.
There is a big gap between the top teams in the Senior championship and the rest. The quality in some of the Senior football championship matches has been horrendous too and while some of them have been exciting, they’ve been poor.
There needs to be a change in the championship structure whereby the top six Senior teams play in one competition and the other teams play in a different competition. Rathnew, St. Pat’s, Baltinglass, Éire Óg and probably Blessington and Bray are the top six teams in the county.
Let them play in one championship and call it Senior ‘A’. Let them play each other once, the top four
