Coffey cleans up in Wicklow Sean wins Jim Murphy title

- Memorial Open

THE Jim Murphy Memorial Junior Open took place on Monday, July 25, in Wicklow Golf Club. The weather was good with blue skies and sun for most of the day!

Over 80 boys and girls, aged 20 or under, took part in the competition with the first three ball heading out around 10am under the watchful eyes of starters John Finlay and John Doyle.

Once all the 18 hole competitors had teed off a group of Wicklow boys and girls played a 9 hole competition.

There was also a 4 hole competition for our group of beginner girls. This was under the watchful eyes of Clodagh Doyle and Gillian Kilkenny.

Competitors arrived from many different clubs and there were many stories of woe from the players throughout the day. However, there were plenty of good scores too.

Charlie Reilly from Wicklow GC was the leader for most of the day last year with 40 points but was pipped at the post.

This year he had a terrific score of 43 points but once again had to settle for second place as another local lad, Sean Coffey, had 46 points. Sean’s dad, Darren, was the first Wicklow G.C. winner back in 1986. Luke Murphy, a grandson of Jim Murphy, came in third with 41 points.

A team competition takes place in conjunction with the main competition and this is sponsored each year by Philip Monaghan, an overseas member who is originally from Wicklow. The winners of the team event were Team 2 from Wicklow GC; Luke Murphy, Katie Roche, Adam Cullen and Charlie Reilly.
