Newtown began to find their feet for the remaining 10 minutes of the half, with a Carl Carthy point just after 21 minutes. Barry Davis added another a minute later as a result of a bad Hollywood kick-out. Newtown were piling on the pressure, but a good Robert Houihan interception in the backs worked up to the forward line for a Brian Flynn point.

Sean Odlum and Niall O’Brien added two more for the black and white men to close the score gap before Brian Flynn kicked the last point of the half, leaving the sides 0-06 to 0-04.

Newtown opened the second half strong, pointing the first score of the half after 25 seconds from Niall O’Brien. Newtown had a good goal chance just after three minutes but it was blocked by goalie Alan Roddy. Hollywood fought back with points from John Mooney and Ross Tyrrell, 0-08 to 0-05 after six minutes.

In contrast to the first half, Newtown were now breaking ball in the middle and good work in from Niall O’Brien and Gerard Synnott saw an unmarked Sean Odlum get one back for the visitors.

With play moving from end to end, Hollywood kicked two points stemming from fress, both from Ross Tyrrell to give the home side a four-point lead going into the 18th minute. Hollywood had a good goal chance in the 19th minute, but it was brilliantly blocked by goalie Danny Brady.

However, two minutes later Brian Flynn struck the back of the net after a great pass in from Dan Burke. Sub Pat Nugent kicked over another point for the Hollywood men but it was Newtown that went on the last two attacks of the game, with a further point from Sean Odlum and a free from Barry Davis to narrow the gap before the final whistle blew.
