Eire Og dominate Carnew

- LIAM O’LOUGHLIN

at Pearse’s Park, Arklow

Strangely, despite all their possession, Eire Og were merely three points to the good at this stage. James Delahunt added one from play but Billy Rickerby responded for Carnew. James Smullen knocked over a further two points from play before the break to leave Eire Og in the lead by 0-8 to 0-3. Carnew must have felt that they could come back into the game in the second period given that they were only five points adrift.

However, that is not how things panned out. Daniel Webb had the ball in the Carnew net after four minutes.

James Smullen and Sean Lawless added two points by eight minutes and now the gap was up to ten points. Michael Collins steadied things for Carnew with a point from play and then John Joe Myers buried a great goal in the tenth minute to give Carnew a welcome lift.

On the three quarter hour mark Eoin McTeague pointed again for Eire Og and one minute later Sean Lawless finished the game as a contest when he goaled from close in. Carnew finished their tally with two further points from John Kavanagh and substitute Jody Byrne. The seasiders ran in four points in the last six minutes from Daniel Webb, Sean Lawless, Eoin McTeague and Webb again.
