NEWTOWN V N DISTRICT

-

Saturday, Aughrim, 5pm Just how much damage the heavy defeat that Newtown suffered against Baltinglass will have done to them probably won’t be known for some time.

Newtown players who would have been on a high after a great one-point win over Avondale looked totally dejected and downbeat trudging off the pitch in Aughrim two weeks ago, this is the ideal game for them to saddle up and get back in the race.

John Murphy’s job of picking them up and dusting them down will have been made much easier when the name of the North District was drawn out of the hat for this do or die game.

A real nightmare start where Newtown looked really flat against a rampant Baltinglass didn’t help their cause but they continued to try and missed a penalty and some other really good scoring opportunities also went a begging near the end.

Shane Mooney, Neil Martin, Paul O’Riordan, Mark Fitzsimons, Ciaran McGurl and Dean Odlum are seasoned players who will have helped the younger players get over that game quickly.

They have some fine young players with Ken Turner a sound goalkeeper, Darren Walsh a fine half-back, Bobby Greenan was their best player against Baltinglass, Stephen and Ross Davis have been playing well and Darragh Callan has been a great find for them in the half-forward line while Declan Doyle is always a threat inside.
