SOUTH EAST ROAD CLUB

-

On Sunday last the club held their annual South East Road Club GP. Perfect weather conditions contributed to our biggest ever field with over 150 riders taking part in both categories. The race took place on the old N11 between Arklow and Gorey with the A2/A3/Juniors completing 5 1/2 laps (95km) and the A4 completing 4 1/2 laps (76km) .

Representing SERC in the A2/3 junior race were Derrick Evans, Tony Barnes, Cian Keogh, Ronan Shortt and Luke Kearney. In the A4 race representing the club were Ciaran Furlong , Brian Sugrue, Lee Pyke and Johnathan O’Toole.

First up was the A2/3 junior race with over 80 riders taking to the start line. A frantic pace right from the start saw the riders complete each lap in an average of 27 minutes. Unfortunately for Derrick a mechanical forced him to withdraw on lap three. After numerous attacks the finish was decided by a bunch sprint with local man Paul Kinch riding for slipstream cycling taking a very fine win huge congratulations to Paul. Ronan , Cian and Luke finished safely in the bunch with Tony finishing just outside the placings being the first unplaced SERC rider. Well done to all.

Next up was the A4 race with over 70 riders lining out. These lads weren’t hanging about with attacks after attacks. In one such attack Ciaran was part of a three-man break that went clear at the start of lap three managing to hold a small gap only to be reeled in on lap four due to the fast pace of the chasing pack.

This race also ended in a bunch sprint with Rossbury Racings David Dempsey taking the win in a very close finish. Safely home in the bunch were Ciaran, Brian and Lee with Johnathan O’Toole taking the first unplaced SERC rider well done to all.

To make this event so successful takes a lot of work and the committee would like to thank the ambulance service, riders, commissaries and the club members who marshalled on the day all your help is greatly appreciated.

Special thanks to Sandy, Margaret and Pam for putting on a very fine spread of food and ensuring everyone went home with full tummies

Club spins continue every Sunday morning leaving Fernhill plaza may 9.30am.
