Wicklow win on derby day

Shortly after Wicklow were to score again following a well worked attack down the blindside. Megan Parkinson sniped over in the corner just before half time to leave the score at 0-31 at the break

The beginning of the second half saw big hits and strong rucking from both sides. Wicklow lost possession in a scrum but managed to regain it, winning a penalty.

A fine piece of play saw Wicklow cross the line once more through Kayleigh Sullivan, converted by her sister Leanne.

From the kick off the Wicklow ladies ramped up the pressure as Arklow attacked again.

Arklow showed great strength off the fringes of the rucks driving the play forward, however an excellent turnover and a display of skill from the Wicklow backline allowed them to score try number six through Megan Parkinson. Ciara Patrick added the extras.

Arklow were determined in their play and continued to be strong in their attacks however Wicklow Ladies won a penalty that created their next try from Megan Parkinson.

From the restart Arklow were awarded a penalty and threatened to breach the Wicklow Ladies defence.

However, Wicklow responded and made great use of the ball to score a final try from Kayleigh Sullivan.

The pressure was piled on by Arklow in the closing minutes and only a try saving tackle kept them out, just short of the Wicklow line. Arklow were resilient and strong throughout with some stand-out performanc­es.

On the day Wicklow put in a fantastic squad performanc­e in front of a crowd of their supporters who had made the journey to witness what was a strong start to Wicklow’s league campaign.

The team scored eight tries including three by both Megan Parkinson and Kayleigh Sullivan and two for Sarah Gleeson.

Leanne Sullivan added four conversion­s and Ciara Patrick also had a conversion to leave the final score at 0-50 to Wicklow.

The next league fixture is in two weeks time at home to Navan.

This group of players is growing stronger and gaining momentum. They train on Friday evenings at 7pm and are still looking for players to join the squad.
