-

A 49-year-old Swords man appeared in Wicklow District Court sitting in Bray yesterday (Tuesday), in connection with the alleged possession of €60,000 worth of cannabis.

Alan McGuirk (49), 7 St Cronan’s Lawns, Swords, appeared briefly before Judge David Kennedy.

Garda Edward Black said that he arrested the defendant on Thursday, September 8.

Garda Black told the court that McGuirk was charged on September 9, 2016, at Wicklow Garda Station, Batchelor’s Walk, Wicklow town, with having drugs for the purposes of sale or supply.

McGuirk made no reply to the charges after caution, the court heard.

Inspector Brian O’Keeffe asked that the defendant surrender his passport and undertake not to apply for any travel documents. The matter was adjourned to November 15.

Barrister Eoin Gallagher made an application for legal aid, which was approved. AGE Action is looking for volunteers in Wicklow to help with the charity’s National Collection, which takes place in just over a week.

The Wicklow collection will take place outside the Bridgewater Shopping Centre in Arklow on Friday, September 30, and Saturday, October 1.

Justin Moran of Age Action said that the collection is one of the group’s biggest fundraisers and could raise tens of thousands of euro to fund the services Age Action provides for older people.

‘ To make it a success, we need volunteers across Ireland to help with the collection and I’m making a special appeal to people in Wicklow to help our senior citizens by taking part in our National Collection,’ said Mr Moran.

‘We’ll be at the Bridgewater Shopping Centre in Arklow from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day and we’re asking volunteers to please give two hours of their time to help raise funds for our work with older people in Wicklow.’

Volunteers can sign up online at www.ageaction. ie or by phoning Michelle at 01 4756989.
