Concertfor Church

-

Last year a hugely successful concert was held in St Patrick’s Church, Wicklow town, to raise funds for the church car park.

Now a second co0ncert has been lined up for this year, taking place on Friday, September 30.

Local artists and acts will again take part in the show being held at St Patrick’s Church.

Tickets cost €10 and can be purchased locally or on the night.

Last Wednesday, September 14, saw the second evening of the new bridge season being played at the new start time of 7.30 p.m. every Wednesday from now on.

Members please note this new kick off time.

Some members who neither read the Wicklow People Bridge notes or attend the Club AGM on the first night back after the summer recess will perhaps arrive at 8 p.m. to find that the fun and games had begun half an hour earlier and that they are LATE…..

Honourable mention of the two players who were late last week was promised but as there was a half table were able to stay and play the remainder of the hands.

It is a shame that these two valued members of the club could not be counted as winners on the night as they did not play all eighteen hands that the rest of the players struggled with.

Both Evelyn Valentine and her long time bridge partner Moya Belton, allegedly thought that they would certainly have taken the top prize on the night but for the fact they missed playing four hands.

For the rest of us players the outcome on the night produced three sets of equal scores. Way out in front was the Ryan duo of Larry and Michael who were leading the pack.

Joint second place were Kay Murphy and her sister Mary Kilcoyne and the other pair were Rose Behan and Ann Houston.

Next came Joan McGeachin and Angela Davitt also joint equal with Teresa Mahon and Jeanette Kiely. Only a single point behind these two pairs were the third joint equal players; Marian O’Sullivan and Caroline Brown and Ann McCarthy and Billy Dunne.

Most interesting and challenging deals that tested the metal of the players making it difficult to reach the best contracts and not to be penalised too heavily when unable to make the number of tricks targeted in the bidding.

The beginners at half past six had an hour of introduction to this interesting and absorbing card game.

Here’s hoping the candidates may return next week! All who might like to try it are most welcome to turn up at the Dominican Ecology Centre in Wicklow at 6.30 p.m. for an hour on a Wednesday evening.

It costs nothing to try it out and could lead to an affordable and happy social outing each week.

The winning pair playing North/South on Monday was Joan Madden and Anthea Goodbody with Mary Flynn and Bernie Rountree in second.

President of the Eastern Region, Edward Kilcoyne, was first East/West with partner Cathal Louth.

Evelyn Lalor and Michael Gleeson were second.

On Monday night last week North/South winners were Tish Hynes and Patricia Doyle with Leonard Murphy and Joe Kelly second.

The East /West section was won by Jack McElhinney and Margaret Nevin closely followed by Deborah Shipperlee and Dorothy Levingstone in second place.

North/South winners on Wednesday night were Margaret Kelly and Rose Butler with Marie Magee and Judy Skates second. Mary Jameson and Ann Kelly won the East/West section with Una Ryan and Una McGowran second.

The successful pairing on Thursday night in the North/ South section were Pauline Jameson and Pam Beacom with Anne Cahill and Philomena O’Dowd second.
