Kiltegan rack up big victory Germaine was the star man

- LIAM O’LOUGHLIN

at Pearse’s Park, Arklow colleague for shots at goal. However, Glenealy were not going to give up easily and landed a goal of their own in the 20th minute.

A long ball into the goalmouth was fumbled by the usually reliable John Keogh, who allowed the ball to fall from his grasp across the line.

Keogh had a steady, confident game in goal and this was his only lapse of the hour. Kiltegan finished the half with a decisive scoring burst. Seanie Germaine pointed from play, John O’Toole netted his second goal and Germaine found the net again just on the call of half time. Glenealy’s only response came with a point from a Conyard free and a Glen O’Gorman point from play.

With Kiltegan ahead by 3-9 to 1-5 at half-time – a 10-point lead – there seemed little chance of Glenealy getting back in the second half.

And so it turned out as Kiltegan went on to dominate exchanges. To their credit Glenealy kept on hurling all through with no real chance of getting back.

Kiltegan had notched a further six points through Rory Finn (2), Padraig Byrne, John O’Toole, Stephan Coogan and JJ Phelan before Glenealy got their first score of the half – a goal from Glen O’Gorman in the 16th minute.

Alan Conyard completed their tally with a point from a free four minutes later. In the last 10 minutes Seanie Germaine added 1-3 for Kiltegan and their final scores came from JJ Phelan and substitute Liam Keogh with a point apiece.

Glenealy had played their Senior hurling semi-final on Saturday evening and lost some of their Intermediate squad in the process.

For young net minder Cormac Geraghty this was a baptism of fire but he acquitted himself well in the circumstances.

The full-back line defended stoutly under severe pressure and Garry Byrne, Eoin O’Neill, James Manly and Alan Conyard kept plugging away.

However, they were unable to contain a rampant Kiltegan in the second half.

For the western men, their fullback line was well marshalled by Mick Mangan. Centre-back Ronan Byrne anchored an impressive half-back line. Geoffrey Birmingham, Rory Finn and John O’Toole got through a load of work but the undoubted star of the show was Seanie Germaine. A haul of 2-9 is impressive by any standard.

The objective of a return to senior ranks is still on track for the Fran Fitzhenry managed outfit.
