NEWTOWN JUNIORS

-

Plenty of action last weekend for all our teams. The under-8s hosted near neighbours St. Anthony’s and after a great game of football where we had loads of goals and saves everyone went home happy.

Among the players who scored for the under-8s were Albie, Lucas, Alex, Oisin, Aaron, Leighton, David and Ryan.

The under 9s found the going tough down in Greystones against a much bigger team. To be fair to our players they never let their heads drop and among the goalscorers for the under-9s were Kacey, Aidan, Mikey, Pat and Ryan while both William and Frank were among those who did well in goal.

No scores from the under-8s or under-9s can be published, as this is non-trophy football as is the under-10s and under-11s.

The under-10s played out a hard fought 2-2 draw with St Anthony’s. In a game where the team had to come from behind on two occasions thanks to two excellent goals from Cathal O’Toole, they could have stole the win deep into injury time but for a stunning save from the Anto’s keeper who just happened to be the grandson of former Newtown Utd/AFC Phoenix goalkeeper Liam McCormack. On the day among the players who starred was Cillian Coffey, Jack Daly and Naoise Lowe.

The under-11s as usual were involved in a high scoring game wining 8-5 at home to Arklow Town’s Mason Melia and Max Synnott (on his debut) both scored hat tricks while the other goals came from Leon Moran and an own goal.

Among the players who starred were the goal scorers, Ryan McMahon and Paudie Gammell.

The under-13s suffered an 8-2 defeat away to Granada in the National Cup. In a bad day at the office Ryan Clarke and Fionn O’Reilly scored the Newtown goals. The under-15s secured their first three points of the season with a 4-3 win at home to Aughrim Rangers. Steven Coughlan helped himself to a hat-trick and Andrew McMahon scored the winner 10 minutes from time after excellent work involving Ciaran Mangan and Josh Odlum.

The ladies made the long trip to Boyne Rovers but despite a decent display they lost out on a score line of 4-1.

The development squad are back in action and they practise every Saturday morning 10-11am outdoors on the top pitch.

We have four players from the club this week celebrating a birthday and they are Leon White and Torrie Delaney from the development squad, Mason Melia from the under-11s and Luke Kelly from the under-15s. Happy birthday to all four from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

Due to unforeseen circumstances our Last Man Standing competition has been delayed and will now start up in October (a date will be confirmed next week). As per norm the cost is €10 per player and the Prize pot is 50 per cent of all monies taken in. Please support as all monies raised goes towards the youth of the area.

On a sadder note the club extends their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Joe Byrne from Church Road and Mo Coakley from Sycamore Drive who both sadly passed away last week. May they rest in peace.
