Spinc trail ‘rut watch’

-

WICKLOW Mountains National Park staff are offering hill walkers the chance to view one of autumn’s most spectacular shows up close.

From late September to early November, Wicklow’s large wild deer population are involved in the ‘rut’. This sees male deer who are trying to impress potential mates go head to head, literally, with other males and this clash of antlers occurs in forests and on mountains across the county.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 8, national park staff will have telescopes set up on the Spinc walking trail near Glendalough so that walkers can stop and try to catch a glimpse of the deer.

There is no booking necessary, however, walkers are advised to visit the information office at the Upper Lake in Glendalough before setting out in order to get directions to the telescopes.

All are welcome to take part, however, walkers are warned that the Spinc trail takes about three hours to complete and may be too long for young children. Hiking boots and rain gear are recommended and anyone with binoculars should bring them along. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times and participants will not be escorted on the hike.

The rut watch is free of charge, however, there is a €4 charge to use the Upper Lake car park. For more information, phone 0404 45656 from Monday to Friday or 0404 45425 at weekends.
