BARNDARRIG

-

Last Sunday our under-12 girls’ team travelled to Ballinakill to play in the Division 3 Shield final against AGB.

The tension was rising as the girls took to the field but right from the first whistle our girls were on form.

Roisin Stone in midfield won the throw in and played the ball to Jessica Traynor who in turn let a long ball in to the forward line which was won by Abbey Turner Doyle and she fired home the first goal.

It wasn’t to be AGB’s day, as Barndarrig won many of their kick outs and then passed the ball again into the forward line, Eabha Suin and Abbey and Sophie gathered many balls before passing them off to Melva Hollingsworth who was unstoppable in the forward line.

Sinead Browne set up a goal number three. A quick look up and hand pass to Jessica Traynor and the ball was in the back of the net.

Our girls worked the ball up and down the pitch playing as a team and AGB found it hard to break through the Barndarrig defence of Celine, Hannah, Caitlin, Eilis, Olivia and Thea, with all six girls working hard to prevent the Arklow girls from taking any shots on Sarah in the goal.

Substitutes were made during the second half which saw Tanya, Sunita and Calanta get stuck in and they made a huge impact in the game. It was hard luck on Rachel, one of our most valuable players, who was benched due to a broken arm.

We would like to thank the girls for their hard work during the year as it really paid off. Final score: Barndarrig 5-12 AGB 2-0.

The under-14 boys football team had an excellent league run this season with a second place finish to Eire Óg.

This good form laid a solid foundation for the championship with Barndarrig topping the group following an away win over An Tóchar and an home win against AGB.

The game versus An Tóchar was a hard fought affair with Darragh O Murchu, Joe O’Shea, Mike Doherty, Tom O’Shea, Conor Leonard, and Mark Whelan standing out on the night. Special thanks to Rian Downes and Peter Boddy who fielded prior to their under-12 county finals.

The lads are in the semi-finals of the under-14 football championship where they meet Ashford, so come along to Rathdrum next Friday night at 7pm to cheer on the lads to a county final.

The lotto number drawn in Sunday’s draw were 1, 22, 25, and 28 and there were three match three winners: Tom Brennan, Donal Curry, and Mary Bolton.

The jackpot is now €4,400 and tickets are on sale every week in Fleming’s shop, Jack White’s, Jones’ Redcross, Browne’s Redcross, the Garage in Barndarrig and D stores in Brittas Bay. Thanks again to all those who are selling and buying lotto tickets.
