Amazons record a big victory over Athy side

-

HAVING suffered a few heavy defeats at the start of the season, Arklow Amazons announced their arrival into the new season with a resounding 25 to 5 victory over Athy.

The game, played in near perfect conditions in front of a large crowd, started with dominance by the Arklow forwards.

This resulted in a try after 18 minutes by Rachael Flood. It looked like the superiority of the Arklow pack was going to produce a very one sided affair.

However, after Arklow lost their very effective prop, Rachael Hunt, the referee had no choice but to concede to the controversial rule of non contested scrums.

This held Arklow back for a short while and had several tries disallowed due to being held up.

Arklow, nonetheless produced tries by Mellisa Hynes and Ellen Doyle and then went into the break

After the break Arklow continued their dominance and produced another try by Melissa Hynes. Athy’s tactic of kicking for position and box kicking could have worked well for them.

However, Arklow full back Lorraine Dunne was rock solid under the high ball and time and again Athy’s kicking merely handed possession back to Arklow.

The quality of tackling and ball handling by Arklow now really shows the effect of the expert coaching they are getting

This was a much improved Arklow performance, a comprehensive win much to delight of the players and supporters.
