Bonus point win over spirited Athy side

Within five minutes a break from the Wicklow twenty-two resulted in a try by Kayleigh Sullivan, the conversion edged wide.

Wicklow were getting into their stride and a great turnover by Ciara Patrick saw Sarah Gleeson score after a typically strong run. The conversion pulled left of the posts.

Moments later, a fantastic gather from the restart allowed for another try by Meagan Parkinson. The try was converted by Ciara Patrick.

Niamh O’Leary’s receiving of restart, followed by strong runs were a notable feature of this match. Athy were unlucky not to score in the first half, losing possession over the line.

Wicklow counter-attacked with a quick 22 restart and this led to Kayleigh Sullivan breaking away for an unconverte­d try. This made the score 36-0 at half-time.

The second half started with a superb attack by Vicky Rice who sent Kayleigh Sullivan over for her third try. Some intensity left the game due to multiple breaks for injury and Wicklow appeared to rest on their laurels. Even so the tries kept coming, this time Rachel Griffey touched down, followed by the conversion from Ciara Patrick. Meagan Parkinson continued Wicklow’s dominance by scoring after kicking the ball on three times, the conversion was good.

Athy, with 10 minutes left, upped their game. Strong scrummagin­g and a turnover saw them cross the line for a converted try.

The final try came with a strong break which led to Hannah-Rose Buckley crossing the line, the conversion scored by Ciara Patrick. This left the final score at 62-7 to Wicklow.

The momentum continues to gather for this side with the action returning to Ashtown lane next weekend where they will face league leaders Balbriggan in a top of the table clash that could have a major influence on who wins the Leinster league Division 3.

Wicklow currently sit in second place having played a game less than Balbriggan. A win on Sunday for Colin Youngers side will see them replace Balbriggan on the top of the league table.
