Deep sadness at passing of beloved Forbes

-

IT has been a very sad start to the season for Wicklow Hockey Club with the sudden and tragic death of much loved club member, Forbes Vigors, who passed away after a hockey match last weekend. All teams in Leinster observed a minute’s silence before their matches this Saturday and Wicklow’s senior teams all wore black mourning bands as a tribute to Forbes.

The senior ladies travelled to Railway Union with a full squad of 16, including Ella Roberts and Caoimhe Molloy, both school girls and promising additions to the senior team.

The first two goals were scored early by captain Ruth Roberts. Schoolgirl Keelan Glenanne, in her second season with the senior team, scored Wicklow’s third goal before the end of the first half. Goalkeeper Hannah Farmer denied Railway union two goals from well executed penalty corners, leaving Wicklow with a comfortable lead going into the second half.

Wicklow had most of the possesion during the second half but struggled to score against a tight Railway defence. After 20 minutes their hard work paid off with a goal from center forward Sophie Moy. A very late goal from Rachel Kinkead brought Wicklow’s total to five, whilst great defence from sweeper Francis Keegan and left back Carol Smullen, ensured Railway union never got on the scoreboard. |

The men’s first team beat YMCA away by four goals to two, whilst their second team had a 2-0 win at home against Swords.

The senior ladies play Guinness at home at East Glendalough school next Saturday at 10am.

Men’s and ladies senior training times are Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm in East Glendalough School.
