Newtown put to the sword Magpies out of LFA Cup

- CRAIG FARRAR

at Clontarf after an impressive start from the home side.

Newtown needed to establish a foothold in the game but East Wall were controlling midfield and it wasn’t long before they turned this dominance into another goal.

An unfortunate handball at the front post from a corner left the referee with no option but to point to the spot.

Stephen Maguire stepped up and this time won the battle of wits, sending Redmond the wrong way to double his side’s tally.

Newtown were chasing shadows for much of the first half, and much of this was down to the stellar work from Calvin Douglas.

Part of the reason we call it the beautiful game is players like Douglas.

The smallest man on the field he may have been but Douglas was the chief orchestrator of the East Wall Bessborough symphony. Left foot. Right foot. Instep. Laces.

This young man has it all and with the necessary hard work Douglas could go far in the game.

He is certainly in the right environment, surrounded by quality players who will only improve him.

Within the opening minute of the second half the game had been put to bed. Gerard Carroll, another standout performer, was involved in the build-up before Sean Young slotted home his side’s third goal of the game.

Carroll was again involved in the fourth goal, chasing down a ball over the top before volleying a super cross which was too far away from the Newtown defenders to get a clearance on but was weighted perfectly to find Maguire at the back post.

The impressive front man saw his initial effort saved well by Redmond before finding the net on the second time of asking.

Newtown began to come back into the game in the second half.

To their immense credit the Magpies kept pushing forward, refusing to accept defeat. Waters looked dangerous at times and on one occasion Sean Heffernan got in behind the East Wall defence only to see his square ball cut out by Calvin Douglas.

Perhaps sensing the danger, the East Wall management made several changes.

The most impressive of these was David Fitzsimons who scored with his opening touches.

Receiving the ball 25 yards from goal, Fitzsimons turned smartly before rifling a low shot towards goal which squirmed under the unfortunate Redmond’s body and into the net.

Fitzsimons was one of many players for the home side who refused to accept any let-up in the intensity of their sides play, big Dan Ennis impressed when introduced at centre-half, but Newtown fought valiantly in the closing stages.

One cup less for Newtown to chase this year but the away side will have taken a lot from this game. Plenty to work on but some good performances from the likes of Dessie Waters and Oisin Greenan provide hope for the coming weeks.
