RUGBY AND GOLF CLUBS HONOURED FOR HISTORIC CUP WINS

- BY MYLES BUCHANAN

Wicklow Municipal District laid on a civic reception for Wicklow Rugby Club and Wicklow Golf Club to mark their historic Provincial Towns Cup wins.

Wicklow Golf Club won the Provincial Towns Cup in August after overturning a first leg 7-2 defeat in Balbriggan by winning the return leg 8-0.

Wicklow Rugby Club defeated Enniscorthy to win the Provincial Towns Cup for the first time in the 91-year history of the competition.

The well attended civic reception was held on Monday evening in the Wicklow County Council buildings by Whitegates.

Liam Byrne, Wicklow Rugby Club President, and Declan Long, captain of Wicklow Golf Club, were both presented with glass mementos which they accepted on behalf of their respective clubs.

Cllr John Snell, the cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District, praised both clubs on his speech for their remarkable achievements.

Speaking after the civic reception, Cllr Snell said: ‘It was a historic win for both clubs in what was a quite unique achievement.

‘As far as anyone is aware this is the first time two provincial cups have been won in the one town.

‘Both went into their games as underdogs and emerged as deserved winners.

‘Wicklow Golf Club were 7-2 down after the first leg in Balbriggan but managed a clean 9-0 sweep in Wicklow to win 11-7 overall. It’s quite unheard of to totally reverse a result like that.

‘Wicklow Rugby Club faced a mammoth task against Enniscorthy but came out deserving victors.

‘ They then beat the same opposition again in the League Final.’
