TRAVERS& CO THINKSPINK FORCANCER
AN Arklow insurance company did its bit to highlight an important issue recently as staff took part in the local version of a nationwide initiative.
Travers & Co Insurances Ltd which has an office on Upper Main Street took part in the Think Pink event, an annual day to create awareness about breast cancer. Every year, almost 3,000 women in Ireland are dignosed with this form of cancer. The company takes part in Breast Cancer Awareness Day every year and all the staff embraced the challenge of wearing brighly coloured pink t-shirts with the ‘ Think Pink’ slogan across the front.
All the staff and directors got involved, including Mary Murray, Kiara Byrne, Mervyn Travers, Siobhán Briscoe, Denise Hyland, Aaron Travers, Lindsay Wood, Alma Travers, Michelle Byrne, Máirín Nolan, Cheryl Dodds and Alan Crummy and they were joined by director of Arklow Cancer Support, Mary O’Brien who thanked them for their efforts.
‘ Travers & Co Insurances Ltd decided to get involved to promote awareness of this worthy cause. All staff wore pink t-shirts, pink posters were displayed in the office window and we provided customers with pink cupcakes and decorated the office with pink balloons and flowers,’ explained Aaron Travers.
Rather than raising funds, Think Pink aims to create awareness about breast cancer and to give information to those seeking support.
In Arklow, the local Cancer Support Group also hosted a large scale Think Pink event, the first of its kind since they relocated to their new premises at St Mary’s Road.
Arklow Cancer Support Group was thrilled to see so many local people and businesses involved in the awareness day and thanked everyone who took part. THE Creation Room has opened up a second store in Wicklow town, providing a space where you can see and purchase local art, photography and crafts.
Jody Connaughton and Julie Meneses first launched The Creation Room two years ago in Fishers of Newtownmountkennedy. Local artists, crafters and photographers are charged a flat rate to exhibit their work. The Creation Room doesn’t take any commission, so the proceeds from all sales go directly to the artist. The exhibitors all change on a 28-day turnaround.
‘We are always looking for more artists, crafters and photographers,’ said Jody. ‘Our space in Newtownmountkennedy is 400 sq ft and we had so many people wanting to come on board we decided to start looking out for other spaces.
‘Wicklow town has a thriving arts and craft scene so we felt it would be the perfect location for our new space. We have 1,000 sq ft of space here and 16 different people based in the shop at the moment.
‘We have everything from jewellery, stained glass and wood-turning to children’s clothes, paintings, crafts and photography. We pride ourselves on offering exceptional local talent at an affordable price. It’s a way to exhibit the level of high talent in the area.’
