Mighty turnout for Conor McCabe race

- MEMORIAL RACE

Conor McCabe Race THE Conor McCabe Memorial race took place on December 4 at Arklow Rugby Club.

This is the eighth year of the race organised by Gareth and Sandy McCabe and supported by South East Road Club (SERC) to honour the memory of their son, Conor.

On a cold crisp Sunday morning, approximately forty cyclists took part on a relatively flat four-lap circuit on the old N11 between the rugby club and past Jack White’s.

This was a handicapped race with the A4 group getting a few minutes head start on the chasing A1/A2/A3 group and it wasn’t long before there were breaks in both groups which made for an exciting race. In the end, Davy Walsh (Velo) came home in first place narrowly beating Reece Young (Slaney) in a sprint at the finish.

A few riders took a spill going through a slippery roundabout at Jack Whites and we wish them all a speedy recovery.

After the senior race, came the main event of the day, the kiddie’s race. There was a fantastic turn out of young children taking part in all age groups up to 10 years of age. All participants were awarded with a medal and sweet treats and got to meet the main man himself, Santa!

SERC would like to thank Arklow Rugby Club for the use of their club house and facilities on the day and a huge thanks to all who took part, the volunteers, race organisers and marshals without whom such a successful event could not be run.

Lastly, a big thank you to the McCabe family for organising a great day of events, fun and food and raising much needed funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation.

Race Results – 1st: Davy Walsh (Velo), 2nd: Reece Young (Slaney), 3rd: Paul Kinch (Slipstream), 4th: David Dempsey (Barrow Wheel- ers), 5th: Luke Kearney (SERC), 6th: Jim Wall (Rossbury), 7th: Cian Keogh (SERC), 8th: Paul Bracken (Slipstream), 9th: Wayne Byrne (SERC), 10th: Emmet Egan (Gorey).
