Wicklow Schools go in search of Leinster final spot
TODAY (Wednesday) is a huge day for a team of young Wicklow footballers as they go in search of a place in the final of a Leinster ‘A’ schools football final.
The semi final of the Top Oil Leinster Senior football ‘A’ championship between Wicklow Schools and St Peter’s College, Wexford, will take place in St Patrick’s Park Enniscorthy today at 1.45pm.
This is the fourth year that Wicklow have taken part in this competition and the first time to reach the semi-final, after wins over Drogheda Schools, Louth Schools and Marist College Athlone.
St Peters have also been impressive in their games to date and will provide stiff opposition for the Wicklow lads.
Some of the Wicklow players were laid low by colds and flu over the Christmas period and it is hoped that they will be fully recovered by Wednesday.
They had a useful workout with the Kildare Minors during the week.
Wednesday afternoon will not suit everybody but it would be good to have a large Wicklow support present for the occasion.
Speaking to the Wicklow People, Wicklow Schools manager John-Paul Davis said that: “Leinster Schools ‘A’competition is the premier competition in Gaelic football for our schools.
“Unfortunately, the schools in Wicklow are participating mainly in the Leinster ‘C’ and ‘D.
We have only one school playing in the ‘B’ competition.
We are giving Wicklow players the platform to play at the highest level by entering a Wicklow Schools team in the ‘A’ competition.
This drives up the standards of the players of what is needed to compete at the top level.
A win on Wednesday would mean that Wicklow will have a team playing in a Leinster final of an ‘A’ competition, which hasn’t happened for a long time.
