Cole on fire ats his first Michael Andrews finals

- ENNISKERRY BC

COLE BYRNE of Enniskerry Boxing Club made a winning start in his first Michael Andrews Tournament in the National Stadium on Sunday.

Cole as a Boy 1 was making his competitive debut and it proved to be a great start. Cole came through three tough bouts on his way to the gold medal and did not drop a round to any of his opponents.

Luke Hall of Rochfordbridge BC was beaten 3-0 in the semi-final on Saturday before Cole met David Mican of Olympic BC, Mullingar in the final. As expected the final was a tough test and it was a great credit to both boys. Cole kept his cool to emerge as the winner on another 3-0 score.

Enniskerry’s Boy 3 Jamie O’Brien also reached the final in his respective category having beaten Alfie Reddington in the semi-final. Jamie met a very good opponent in Sean Kearney of Mulhuddart in the final and in a very closely contested bout was rather unlucky to be on the wrong end of a 2-1 split decision.

Cole, Jamie and Johnny Connors will now go on to compete in the Leinsters in March.

Enniskerry’s coaches don’t have time to rest on their laurels as the girls weigh in for the Michael Andrews Tournament next weekend. Jade Smith, Abbie Doyle and Daina Moorehouse will all be hoping to bring back more gold for the club.

Daina, along with coaches Paul O’Toole and Eve Carr will be travelling to Sweden at the end of the month to represent Leinster and Enniskerry in the Golden Girls competition.
