Wicklow ready to take on the best

Rugby club earn spot in top flight

-

WICKLOW RFC made history on Sunday as they sealed promotion to Leinster League Division 1A for next season.

The club won the Division 1B championship for the first time and with it the right to line out against the best Junior rugby sides in the province.

The warriors from Wicklow faced Clondalkin RFC on Sunday knowing that victory would hand them promotion to Division 1A and they came out on top in an extremely competitive game on a scoreline of 16-13.

The players, coaches, management, physios and all involved deserve enormous credit for the monumental feat.

It was also a wonderful day for the supporters that have followed the team through good and bad times the length and breadth of the province every Sunday.

When asked for comment, club PRO Stephen Clarke emphasised the amount of work that has gone into this achievement, stating, “We’ve been aiming for this for years. We were obviously very disappointed to lose out on promotion last year.

“While we’re delighted to win the league and get a trophy promotion was the primary goal at the start of the year so it’s great to have achieved that”.

Playing in Division 1A of the Leinster League next year means that games next season will be played on Saturdays rather than Sundays.

Clarke noted that the step up is something that everyone at the club is looking forward to, “Division 1A is like the premiership for us, all the best clubs play in it so it will be great to compete at that level.

“Playing on Saturdays next year is important for the club, it’s something the lads really wanted to achieve.

“Lots of work has gone into this promotion so we’re thrilled to finally achieve it.

“It’s great for the club”, he said.
