Rathnew rally to take points Late scores clinch the win

A Jordon Graham goal just before the half time whistle led to a very excited Rathnew sideline as he took on three Ashford defenders to find the back of the net.

With thirty five minutes in play left to go, the home side were well on top with 1-7 to four points.

The second half of the game was a major turning point for Ashford.

A speedy Thomas Kearns put in solo run after solo run from the backline to get the ball up to his team mates and even kicking over a couple of points himself.

Brian Coen brought back the Ashford energy as he over came the Rathnew defence on a meandering run which ended in a goal rattling the back of the home side’s net.

Ashford were getting stronger and gaining a lot more chances as the second half continued as Nugent and Coen kicked over point after point, eventually bringing the teams level for the first time in the game.

It was 1-9 a piece with just three minutes to go, the anticipati­on was building and both teams were burning out.

Rathnew’s Ross Quinn found himself a goal chance as he stood one on one with Ashford’s keeper Liam Hender Phillips.

Philips pulled out the save of the game as he blocked a bursting ball and fired it back out the field in seconds.

However, Ross Quinn and Philip Murphy of Rathnew then slotted over a score each, winning the game for the home side.
