Prime retail site on Arklow’s Main Street snapped up

IT appears that development in Arklow could be on the up as a high profile Main Street premises was sold and plans were unveiled for the construction of a new petrol station on the north side of the town.

The former Morgan Doyle Ltd premises on Main Street was withdrawn from auction on Thursday and sold to a private buyer.

The prime town centre site was home to the local furniture and interiors company for many years and later housed an indoor market.

Agent for the sale Breda Bermingham of Sherry Fitzgerald Myles Doyle in Arklow confirmed the sale but remained tight-lipped on the identity of the new owner and said that confidentiality is a specific condition of the deal.

It is understood that there was a significant level of interest in the site but there is no indication of yet as to what plans the new owner might have for it.

Meanwhile, planning permission has been sought for the construction of a new Applegreen service station at the former Hill’s Garage site at Killinskyduff on the north side of Arklow.

An application has been lodged with Wicklow County Council by Petrogas Ltd for permission to erect a forecourt canopy and two fuel pumps, and the conversion of the existing building to a petrol station ship including deli, ATM, toilet and storage facilities.

The application includes provisions to install a new wastewater treatment system and revisions to existing car parking.

A decision is due to be reached by June 18, 2017.
