Gold for top class Treacy

ASHFORD/GLENEALY’S Roisin Treacy claimed a superb gold medal in the girls under-16 7km individual marathon.

Strong winds hampered the runners but did not deter Roisin, who has a very bright future in athletics, winning that elusive gold medal.

The Ashford native runs with Ashford Athletic Club also does Tetrathlon which involves running 1500m, pony cross country, swim as many lengths in three minutes, shooting 10 metres target and she won the national title last year and represente­d Ireland internatio­nally and in the schools running cross country last year.

In the marathon she beat the Saoirse O’Brien of Mayo, All-Ireland 1,500m.

Over 2800 participan­ts arriving, on the day –all hoping for gold, but mostly there for fun.

Wicklow were well represente­d at the first national finals at the weekend with teams in marathon, cross country, mixed distance, swimming, gymnastics, table quiz and debating.

The following made their respective finals: U12 boys/girls, U14 girls mixed distance relays who were coached by Billy Porter.

Swimming: Silver-Lucy Bracken Arklow in U14 Freestyle. Bronze: Anya Mc Kenna Roundwood U8 Freestyle. The Following made their respective finals: Dave Baron BBK/R, Jack and Matthew Corrigan Enniskerry, Lauren Auld Lakeside, Ciara Mc Kenna Roundwood, Jacob Fry BBKR, and Arklow’s U13 Girls Relay. All the managers especially county manager Breda Reid, who looked after the teams on the day were offered thanks.

Next Sunday, May 14, all roads lead to Glenealy Hall for the county talent finals starting at 2pm.

Art, model making and hand writing finals will be in Dunlavin on May 29 and the athletics final in Shillelagh on June 10.
