TOUR DE LEINSTER ART EVENT

-

WICKLOW County Council is encouraging students in Wicklow to take part in the 2017 Primary School Road Safety Art Competition to coincide with the Tour de Leinster - a four day, 600km cycle across Leinster to raise funds for Downs Syndrome Ireland.

The race is taking place between September 14 and 17 and will pass through Blessington, Valleymount, Laragh, Rathdrum, Woodenbridge, Avoca and Arklow.

The theme for the art competition is ‘Safe Cycling in Wicklow’ and it is open to primary school students in 1st to 5th classes in all of the above-mentioned towns and villages.

Students from these classes are invited to paint or draw an A4 landscape picture depicting ‘Safe Cycling in Wicklow’. The picture may show cyclists with well maintained bikes, wearing cycling helmets and bright coloured clothing on the correct side of the road – with two hands on the handlebars and one cyclist per bike and never more than two cyclists side by side – two wheels on the ground. It may also show a County Wicklow landmark or historic building in the background.

Each school is asked to arrange local independent judging and send on the winner from each class. Wicklow County Council will select the best entry at each class level – leading to five awards plus best overall 1st and 2nd. All five winners will receive a plaque and a goodie bag while the overall 1st and 2nd winners will also receive a cycling jersey.

Winners will be presented with their prizes in Lynham’s Hotel, Laragh, on Thursday, September 14, by Stephen Roche, Tour de France, Giro d’Italia stage races, and the World Road Race Championship winner.

For further information or to register your school’s interest please email lmcdonal@wicklowcoco.ie. Closing date for receipt is 12 noon on Friday June, 23.
