Arklow girl boxers finish the season on real high
ARKLOW girls Leanne Doyle, Tegan Farrell and Amber Byrne pulled out all the stops to finish the boxing season in style.
Leanne Doyle has won the grand slam this season, winning gold in the Esker girls championships, the Michael Andrews Championships, the Leinster girls championships and the girls National Championships.
Tegan Farrell won silver in the National Championships. Amber Byrne won gold.
In the National Stadium in Saturday’s finals, Amber Byrne boxed Rachel Lawlor from Portlaoise.
Amber had a slow start in the first round but stepped up the pace in the second, scoring well with two and three punch combinations leaving it down to the last round where Amber put on the pressure, retaining her Irish title.
Tegan Farrell faced Shauna Maguire from Kilmananagh BC. A very aggressive opponent kept Tegan on the back foot.
It was all square going into the last round where Shauna kept up the pressure to win a 4-1 decision.
In other news, popular Arklow boxer Aaron Tuke travels to Hungary on Tuesday as guest of a Smithfield team to take part in a multi-nations competition. We wish him well.
Also, Fergal Redmond travelled to Derry at short notice on Saturday to box the top of the bill against up and coming Brent McGinty, Oakfield BC, Donegal.
It was a cracking fight and great crowd pleaser, punch for punch that could have went either way but McGinty won on a split decision.
Three Arklow juveniles, Owen Moore, Daniel Fox and Eimhin McCormack, have stepped up training for the boys national championships next month and Sean Crowley is Arklow’s sole entry in the National Junior Cadets in July.
Arklow’s underage boxers finished for the season on Friday night last with a party in Funworks. They will resume the first week in September when the schools re-open.
