Now operating from a brand new purpose-built premises

-

TIERNEY’S Pharmacy is now operating from a brand new purpose-built premises in Rathdrum, marking an exciting new departure for the business while continuing the service which has been provided in the town since 1906.

Run by Michael and Linda Tierney, Tierney’s Pharmacy hasn’t moved far however, and is now open for business just next door to the former premises.

While there is no denying that the pharmacy is now a modern, bright and spacious premises, approximately three times the size of the old shop, Michael and Linda are delighted to be able to cater to their customers’ needs just as they have done for many years, while also offering some additional services.

The pharmacy now rests on the site which was previously the home of Michael’s father, the late John Tierney and was a year in construction.

All of the work from the bricks and mortar to the shop front and signage was carried out by local suppliers and tradespeople and is testament to the high quality of workmanship that is available in County Wicklow.

The eagle-eyed in the community may have already spotted the two stone dragons which perch on the top of the new building - a nod to Linda’s Chinese heritage.

Michael has worked in the family business since he qualified as a pharmacist in 1979 and he and Linda took over from his parents, John and Vera in 1990.

John and Vera served the community of Rathdrum for many years and were in business since 1955. They became the local pharmacists following the retirement of John Atkinson.

Mr Atkinson started up his business in 1906 and was married to Laura Peace Cole, who incidentally, was given her middle name as she was born on the day that the Boer War ended.

While the premises is new, the level of customer service and quality remain the same at Tierney’s Pharmacy.

With a team of 12 full and part time staff, many of whom are living locally, including two pharmacists and two technicians, an array of services are on offer including both private and HSE prescriptions, free blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) checks, advice on smoking cessation, morning after pill which from July 1 will be available to medical card holders and general advice on all over-the-counter medicines.

Looking to the future, there are plans to introduce nurses sessions with asthma and diabetes patients where free expert advice will be made available to support patients in managing their condition.

It is also expected that a patient review scheme will be introduced which will encourage patients to have all their medications reviewed and assessed by a pharmacist.

The new, spacious premises has enabled Tierney’s Pharmacy to carry a much wider range of stock from toiletries and make up to giftware and baby care items.

Brands carried include Vichy, Laroche-Posay, Revolution, Rimmel and Flormar and gift hampers can also be made up to order.

Tierney’s Pharmacy invites both old and new customers to its official launch event on Wednesday, May 24 from 3-6 p.m. A special guest will make an appearance on the day.

Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. - 5.30 p.m.
