Minister Varadkar on whistlestop tour of Wicklow
MINISTER Leo Varadkar was on a whistlestop tour of Co Wicklow on Monday, as he paid a visit to Wicklow Gaol, County Buildings and the Glenview Hotel.
The trip to the Garden County was one of a number of scheduled visits by cabinet Ministers to constituencies around the country and was a chance for the Minister for Social Protection to discuss changes made with that department with local businesspeople.
The Fine Gael leadership candidate met Minister of State Andrew Doyle at Wicklow Gaol shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday.
‘In 2012, Wicklow Gaol received funding of €192,000 towards the refurbishment of the gaol,’ said Minister Doyle. ‘Minister Leo Varadkar was Minister of Tourism at that time, so this is the perfect opportunity to showcase the improvements made to the gaol.
‘ The aim of today’s visit is to allow the Minister to engage with people in business in the area and to discuss changes made within the Department of Social Protection and in areas around PRSI related benefits,’ said Minister Doyle.
After enjoying a tour of the gaol, the two Ministers headed over to County Buildings where the Wicklow Municipal District was distributing a number of community awards.
Later on the same evening, Minister Varadkar attended a scheduled event in the Glenview Hotel, where he was to discuss his agenda for transformation within the Social Protection brief and the major initiatives under way that impact individuals, families and business.
