Man rescued after falling off of pier

CYCLIST WINCHED TO SAFETY AFTER FALLING ONTO THE STRAND BEACH

-

RESCUE personnel battled against an incoming tide to help a man who had fallen from the quayside in Wicklow town while cycling last week.

Shortly after noon last Tuesday, May 16, the person was cycling at Wicklow harbour when then fell from the quayside onto the strand beach.

The pagers of Wicklow RNLI crew members were activated at 12.24 p.m. and the inshore lifeboat crew were on scene within minutes, where they were met by ambulance personnel.

The paramedics were assessing the casualty and asked the lifeboat crew to prepare a stretcher to transport the person by boat to the nearby slip, as the rocky terrain on the strand would prevent them getting the casualty safely up onto the road. The tide was also coming in at the time.

Once the Coast Guard cliff rescue unit arrived on scene, it was decided to use their specialist climbing equipment to winch the casualty off the beach by stretcher.

Lifeboat crew members who had assembled at the strand assisted with the stretcher extraction and once the casualty was brought up onto the road, he was brought to hospital by a waiting Ambulance.

Tommy Dover said: ‘Our volunteer crew were involved in a multi-agency operation to extract an injured person from strand at Wicklow harbour at lunchtime,’ said Wicklow RNLI press officer Tommy Dover last Tuesday. ‘ The injured person has now been taken to hospital for further treatment.

‘ This was also the first call out for our new inshore lifeboat RNLB Dennis-Audry, which was officially named earlier this month,’ he said.
