Wicklow Historical Society looks forward to launch of new journal

-

TWO big events are on the horizon for Wicklow Historical Society – its AGM next week and the launch of the society’s 30th annual journal.

The AGM will take place next Monday, May 29, at 8 p.m. in the Old Boathouse on the seafront in Wicklow town (the CCM building). All members and anyone interested in joining is asked to attend. The society welcomes new members; all they need is an interest in the rich history of the Wicklow area.

The society’s 30th annual journal will be on local shelves in a matter of weeks. There has been a huge welcome for the new editors, John Alvey and John Power, and their articles on ‘The Demolition Squad, Life on an Ashford Farm in the 1950s’ and ‘Church of Ireland, Church Hill Burial Records.’ Others articles appearing on its pages will include ‘Life in Wicklow 100 Years Ago’ by John Finlay, ‘Wicklow Miscellany’, ‘Wicklow and the Otherworld Woman’ and ‘Transportation from Wicklow Gaol’ by Stan J O’Reilly, ‘Tom Keogh, A Wicklow Revolutionary’ by Ben Fagan, ‘The First New Zealand Serviceman Killed in WW1 was a Wicklowman’ and ‘An Interesting Letter from Liam Price’ by Noel O’Cleirigh and ‘Murrough Miscellany: The Murder of Constable John Fitzgerald’ by Vincent O’Reilly.

As usual, the journal will also feature a selection of interesting, old photographs and images of Wicklow past. If anyone has a photo which they think may be of use to the society for publication, they can call 0404-67494.

The patronage drive is under way at the moment with an appeal for patrons to once again support the work of the society. Further details are available from 0404-67494.
