Glynn and Hughes shine

- SPRING HURLING

GLENEALY 2-15 CARNEW EMMETS 0-14

THE hunting qualities of Leighton Glynn and the showing of Gary Hughes were two of the high points for the visiting Glenealy side as they accounted for Carnew in this interesting Spring Hurling League encounter last week.

Hughes fired home a screamer of a goal in the opening half and handled the free-taking duties while impressing from his overall play. Glynn showed his damaging potential over the 60 minutes, catching over Oisin Furlong in the second half before driving low past Michael Collins in the Carnew net to put the tie to bed.

Glenealy’s half-time lead of 1-09 to 0-08 was deserved and it might have been more but for a superb reflex save from Collins in the Carnew goal pushed over a Hughes penalty after the home side were forced to foul Glynn in the danger zone.

In fairness this was nothing more than a useful workout for both teams. For Carnew there were useful showings from John Walshe, Wayne Kinsella while Enda Donohue was decent from placed balls. Don Hyland showed his class in flashes while Oisin Furlong was tasked with minding Leighton Glynn and he will learn from such a responsibility.

Glenealy will be happy with Hughes and Glynn and they will be very satisfied with their midfield of Jamie Byrne and Alan Driver while Warren Kavanagh, Emmet Byrne, Danny Staunton and Tommy Doyle impressed further back down the field.
