East Glendalough School
CLASS OF 2017
The class of 2017 said goodbye to East Glendalough with a series of events over the course of Monday and Tuesday, May 22/23. On Monday, they held their final classes, said goodbye to teachers and finished with a waterfight on the astro pitch.
On Tuesday, the School had kind permission to host a barbecue in the Abbey Grounds in the town before an end-of-year service led by Rev Jack Kinkead and Rev Alan Breen. The day concluded with a Graduation Ceremony in the Grand Hotel, at which students were presented with a certificate of graduation and were treated to a trip down memory lane with Mr Galligan’s slide show.
Many thanks to all who came along and who contributed to the day: it was a lovely way for the class of 2017 to finish.
SCHOOL EXAMS
School exams began on May 24 and will run through till the end of term.
STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council finished what was a remarkable year of hard work and advocacy on behalf of the student body by meeting again with the board of management to discuss their work.
MEITHEAL
The EGS parents’ association held their second Meitheal. A willing and generous crew of families assembled and took on strimming, trimming, weeding, clearing gutters, cleaning windows and painting fences. It was a brilliant morning, and thanks to all those who came along to help.
EGS BADMINTON
A large group of first and second year students traveled to Temple Carrig School recently to compete in a fun badminton blitz. A great time was had by all. A big thank you to Ms Hudson for organising the event.
BLEEP TEST
It’s that time of year again when students complete the annual bleep test.
This gives students an indication of their cardiovascular fitness. This ‘base’ fitness is not just important for those playing sport but also hugely important from a health perspective. Students are able to compare their own individual scores with the average scores for their age group/ gender.
Big congratulations go to Derek Crammond, whose score of 146 is the second highest ever boys score and Rhiannon Wynne O’Sullivan, whose score of 101 is the third highest ever girls score.
SPORTS DAY REVIEW
Written by Jazmine Arthur 1E – This was my first Sports Day in secondary school at East Glendalough and I had so much fun. I really enjoyed watching all the races and my friends compete. I ran in the first year 50m race. I didn’t place in the race but loved participating. I really enjoyed the three-legged race. Unfortunately I fell over twice but got the hang of it towards the end.
The lunch time league finals were on in the PE hall. My team managed to reach the basketball final. It was a tough match but we came out on top and I was delighted to be part of the winning team.
The weather didn’t turn out too good on the day but everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had great fun despite the Irish weather!
The inflatable games were brilliant even though they were wet and we all got soaked. There was a barbecue during the day and the food was delicious. This was topped off by some lovely ice cream which even in the rain went down well. I really enjoyed Sports day and can’t wait till next year. Maybe the sun will also turn up!
