Gardaí treating death of man as ‘suspicious’
GARDAÍ have confirmed that they are treating the death of an Arklow man in a fatal traffic collision in the early hours of Monday morning as ‘suspicious’ and have launched a criminal investigation.
The deceased has been named locally as Declan Kelly, aged in his forties. It is understood that Mr Kelly worked in the farming industry and was well known in farming circles through his work as a cattle hoof trimmer.
Gardaí believe that pedestrian Mr Kelly was fatally injured when struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the Coolgreany Road in Arklow shortly after 2.20 a.m.
However, after gardaí viewed CCTV footage from the area, a second scene at the Ballyraine flyover, near Emyvale estate on the road between Arklow and Johnstown was sealed off by Gardaí at approximately 4 a.m. on Tuesday morning where a team of forensic detectives commenced their investigations. Both scenes were examined by forensic collision investigators and crimes scenes investigators. Mr Kelly’s body was removed to St Columcille’s Hospital, Loughlinstown, where a post mortem examination was conducted, results of which are still awaited. Investigating officers have confirmed than a man is helping them with their enquiries.
A vehicle has also been seized for forensic examination.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious at either location and along the route from the roundabout at the Coolgreany Road towards Ballyraine and out to the Johnstown road between 1.30 a.m. and 2.30 a.m. Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Arklow Garda Station at 0402 26320.
