Newtown appealing decision by WDFL to Leinster

-

NEWTOWN UNITED are to appeal the Wicklow League’s dismissal of their protest in relation to the alleged use of illegal players by Carnew AFC in the Jim McLauglin Premier Cup semi-final to the Leinster Football Association (LFA).

The Magpies’ decision was confirmed to the Wicklow/Bray People this week, days after this newspaper revealed the decision of the WDFL following the hearing at the Wicklow League’s offices in Bray on May 29.

Newtown United’s protest arose following their 3-1 defeat to Carnew AFC in the semi-final at the Back Alley on Sunday, May 21. The Magpies are alleging that up to three illegal players were used by the Carnew side on the day.

It is believed that the decision of the WDFL was to reject the protest on the grounds of lack of evidence.

Newtown United had the right to lodge an appeal within 72 hours of their receipt of the decision which they have now done.

Rathnew AFC A await in the final of the Jim McLaughlin Premier Cup but the date and time of the fixture is now uncertain due to the Newtown appeal to the LFA.

Staying with Carnew AFC, the Pat O’Toole Division 2 side closed in on the league title after their 6-3 defeat of St Fergal’s at Bllywaltrim Recreational Park last week.

However, there is some uncertainty over the current standings due to an investigation regarding the naming of an illegible player on the match card from the May 3 game between Carnew and Shamrock Celtic at the Back Alley.

Away from the boardroom, this weekend sees Carnew AFC take on Greystones United at 11.30am at the Back Alley in a crucial Pat O’Toole Division 2 game.

Should repercussions not follow from the Shamrock Celtic game and Carnew claim victories in their last two remaining games against Greystones and St Fergal’s, both at home, the Wexford border men will be crowned champions.
