A very busy spell for South East Road Club riders

IT has been a busy few weeks for the SERC (South East Road Club)club with the racing crew enjoying many successes at local and national level.

WALLER CUP

Bohermeen CC hosted the Waller cup on April 23 in Meath and Luke Kearney took centre stage riding a brilliant race to take first place in the A2 event. Cian Keogh again showed his fine form of late taking 8th in the A3 event ably supported by Tony Barnes and Frank O’Leary.

In the under-14 event, Connor Short took third and Eoghan Cooke continuing their great start to season and placing yet again.

O’ROURKE MEMORIAL

The Frank O Rourke memorial race was held on April 30 hosted by Wexford CC and again SERC was well represente­d on the day despite the deluge of rain that fell. Another great race by Luke Kearney netted him fifth in the A2 race while in the A3 event, Cian Keogh got himself another top finish in 11th. Local lad, Liam Curley riding for NRPT came second in the A3 race.

Luke Kearney fine run of results has seen upgraded to A1 where he will now be competing against the best riders in the country on a weekly basis. Best of luck to Luke form all at SERC.

NOEL O’NEILL TROPHY

Well done to Brian Sugre who took a fine fourth place finish in the A4 race at the Noel O’Neill Trophy held on the challengin­g Khyber Pass in the Phoenix Park on May 13.

SHAY ELLIOT MEMORIAL

The prestigiou­s Shay Elliot Race one-day race is the toughest and one of the longest running events on the domestic calendar was held on May 14. Arklow man, Liam Curley riding for the NRPT - Nicolas Roche Performanc­e Team (NRPT) - won the A3/Junior race beating some of the best junior riders in the county. This is a fantastic result for the young man and all at SERC congratula­te him on a brilliant result. Liam represente­d SERC all the way through the underage system.

This prominent result has seen Liam selected for the Irish Junior team taking part in the Nations Cup in Germany from June 9 and 11. All at SERC wish Liam the best.

LEINSTER YOUTH

Big congratula­tion to SERC member Cian Keogh who was selected to represent Leinster Youth recently at the Retinne two-day race in Liege, Belgium and also at the prestigiou­s Shay Elliot race.

U-14 IRISH SELECTION

The fantastic form of our two under-14 riders got its just reward with Connor Short and Eoghan Cooke being selected on the under-14 Irish team that travelled to the UK to compete in three races during May. Huge congratula­tions to the young lads who are seeing their hard work starting to pay off.

Well done also to Connor Short getting third in the recent Leinster Youth Time Trial championsh­ips held on May 13.

Orwell Wheelers 3 Stage Race Well done to the SERC youths in May in Corkagh Park at Orwell wheelers three-stage race with Eve Short winning the under-10 girls overall in her first open race, with two wins and a close second and even more impressive she was fourth overall against the boys.

Eoghan Cooke took second overall in the under-14s and Conor Short fifth and winning the final eliminatio­n race. Well done to Ruari Murphy in his first open race at under-12.

SLANEY CC LEAGUE

During April and May, Slaney CC hosted their five league races for A4 riders on their Davidstown course, south of Enniscorth­y. SERC was well represente­d at all races and it was a good test for the A4 crew to test themselves against the competitio­n and fine tune their racing skills for the upcoming season. Johnny O’Toole placed fifth and sixth in two of the races.

GOREY CC LEAGUE

Neighbouri­ng club Gorey CC hosted two of their five league races in May. First up on a challengin­g undulating course, Cian Keogh placed fifth in the A3 and Wayne Byrne and Brian Sugre came home fourth and fifth respective­ly.

In the second race on June 2, Luke Kearney took second in the A1/A2/A3 race with Wayne Byrne finishing second in the A4 race.

SERC LEAGUE RACES

The club’s own league races started on May 11 on the Inch circuit south of Arklow with local lad Liam Curly winning the A1/2/3 race while in the A4 race, Wayne Byrne showed the young lads how it is done getting away in a fourman break and winning the sprint finish with Jonathan Russell and Johnny O’Toole coming home in fifth and sixth.

The second race took place on June 8 and again SERC riders were in the mix at the business end of both races. Frank O Leary came home fourth in the main race with Cormac Mullet taking first in only his second competitiv­e race ever. Wayne Byrne took third.

IRISH MOUNTAIN BIKE

Derrick Evans continues his great form in the mountain bike races with a fine third place finish in the Irish National Point Series hosted by MAD Mtb on June 4 in Ticknock, Dublin.
