Mighty day of sport at the Community Games finals

-

THE County Wicklow Glendalough Hotel Community Games track and field finals were held in Shillelagh on Saturday last and what a wonderful occasion it turned out to be.

Huge credit to Liam Lyons (Carlow) and his helpers who battled the weather on Thursday and Friday to mark the track. There was a downpour on Friday night and it was still raining at 6.45am on the day so rain gear, welly boots and a boat looked to be the order of the day, but no, the gods of Community Games past saw fit to turn on the sunshine.

Master of ceremonies Billy Porter along with the pipe band got the parade underway and the judges had a difficult time trying to pick first and second.

Enniskerry came out winners and joint second place went to Roundwood and BBK/R.

Children from Lakeside BBK/R and Ashford/Glenealy read the pledge in Irish and English and Torch lap.

In this the Jubilee year, Wicklow Community Games Honorary Life President, Lily Kavanagh - 46 years service and still going strong - in her address said that all in County Wicklow Community Games deserve a “pat on the back”.

Our little county coming out on top she was so proud to represent Wicklow and honoured to receive the Overall All-Ireland Golden Volunteer gold medal, very grateful to all who supported her and said she felt 21 again!

A bouquet of flowers was presented to Lily who held her gold medal aloft and wished the best of luck to all the children participating on the day and she reminded them that win or lose the most important thing was to have a great day.

Sincere thanks are offered to the sponsors who help make the day so special.

Shillelagh Red Cross, the pipe band, the medal presenters and last, but by no means least, the volunteers from all the areas and the County Board, all of whom work tirelessly all year to keep Community Games alive in County Wicklow.

Track referee Tony McGinley of Lakeside, who stepped in at the last minute along with starters Terry Kavanagh and Richard Bourke, got the heats, semi-finals and finals underway and all areas gave it their all.

Field referee Breda Reid with Shelia Driver and newly qualified Garda Aidan Miley, a former participant, kept law and order.

There were some tight finishes –showing that the gold medal and the chance to reach Abbotstown in August was hard to achieve.

The judges had some tough decisions on the day. Well done to all the children who took part and did not let the wet underfoot conditions in one corner hamper them.

To finish off the day there was a light-hearted event – the parent relay race. This race is hotly contested every year and is the only way for parents to get a medal and after a close finish it was Shillelagh taking the cup home.

The Ann McLoughlin award was presented by Ann’s parents Tony and Bridget to Phyllis Farrell Ashford/Glenealy.

This award is presented annually to a person for many years of unselfish service to Wicklow Community Games.

Wicklow Community Games wish to sincerely thank our main sponsor for 2017 Pat Casey Glendalough Hotel, Andrew Auld swimming and all who sponsor our games without their help the games could not happen.

The biggest thank you of the day goes to the children who make games what they are.

Taking part is more important than winning.
