St Coen’s pupils pick up some healthy tips during bike week
FUN AND learning for over 350 pupils and parents was the order of the day at St Coen’s NS, Rathnew during National Bike week last Wednesday.
As an outdoor activity, Wicklow Local Sports Partnership gave all pupils the opportunity to learn safe cycling skills on the super new play area at St Coen’s.
Pupils were also treated to smoothies from smoothie bikes the new fun way to keep fit, have a healthy snack and provide sustainable energy to make your smoothie by cycling to power the smoothie maker.
Meanwhile, indoors pupils from third and fourth class, with the assistance of teachers Mr Kavanagh and Mr McAdam and the Co Wicklow Safe Food, created fun food information stands. These included a cookery demonstration, fill the fridge quiz, sugar in foods and the food pyramid.
The HSE dietetics service, MABS, Wicklow County Council Stop Food Waste and Co Wicklow Community Partnerships Tobacco Cessation programme also provided information.
Parents were challenged to answer a questionnaire, the answers to which could be found in the displays. When completed, each questionnaire was entered into a draw for a fruit basket.
All parents and pupils had a fun day while gaining some valuable information on exercise, cycling and healthy eating.
Co Wicklow Community Partnership, Community Food Initiative and Wicklow Local Sports Partnership extend their thanks principal Miriam Cahill and her staff at St Coen’s for hosting the event and the preparation in particular of Mr McAdam and Mr Kavanagh.
