Grand Slam Bridge results

-

The competition this week was a ‘Mitchell’ movement made up of nine seated pairs and nine moving pairs.

This week saw many great deals and many slam going hands. Two visiting pairs bid and made the ultimate grand slam winning all 13 tricks; one of the two pairs scored an impressive 1,790 points as their opponents doubled the contract and failed to thwart the Grand Slam. Six other hands bid and made small slams, that is twelve tricks. One ambitious pair bid a grand slam in Diamonds (7 Diamonds) and the opponents got them down five tricks doubled for a 1,400 point penalty.

The winners of the moving pairs were Phil Lalor and Margaret Redmond. Gwen Teevan and Mairead Fallon came home second and third were Statia Hagan and Joan Madden.

In the seated section, Joan D’Arcy and Maura Kavanagh proved unbeatable and were a good bit ahead of Birdie Andrews and Helen Gorman in second place. They were followed closely in third spot by Mary Jameson and Robert Doyle who were third last week as well.
