Swimming club races

Conditions were perfect for the Wicklow Swimming Club races last Sunday morning, June 18, with sunshine, no wind and a big improvemen­t in water temperatur­e.

One-hundred-and-seventy-four swimmers competed in four different age categories of races.

First up were the Junior Sprints: under six boys – first, Dara Mitchell; under six girls – first, Sarla Hartley, second, Muireann Smith and third, Molly Power; under eight boys – first, Stephen Bell, second, Oisin Kearney and third, Owen Traynor; under eight girls – first, Taylor Sherry, second, Niamh O’Neill and third, Bella Redmond; under 10 boys – first, Andriy Kravchenko, second, Matthew Mooney and third, Declan O’Neill; under 10 girls – first, Niamh Waters, second, Lianna Bell and third, Sadbh Hartley; under 12 boys – first, John Ahearne and second, Colm O’Neill; under 12 girls – first, Ciara Whelan, second, Caitlin Keogh and third, Emma Seckington; under 14 boys – first, Kyle Capilitan Joyce.

Twenty-one juniors got back in the water for the Junior Challenge: first was Ciara Whelan, followed byJill Connolly in second and Ella Kelly in third.

The Intermedia­tes were up next with a 400 metre swim for the Humby cup. Siorse Dolan swam a fantastic race to take first place, with Rosin Vize in second and Andriy Kravchenko and Amy Bell King in joint third place.

The Youths had an 800 metre race for the Committee Cup. This was another close race with Mia Christense­n taking first place just ahead of Robyn Brennan in second and Emily Clarke in third position.

One-hundred-and-four-seniors raced for the Humby Family/Vartry Garage Cup. Helen Cassidy was first home, followed by Cammeron McKeever in second place and Pricilla Hurley in third.

Mid-week races start today (Wednesday, June 21) at 6.45 p.m. for the Intermedia­te-SilverShop Cup and at 7.15 p.m. the seniors race for the Ral Brien Memorial Cup.

Racing next Sunday, June 25, starts at 10.15 a.m. with the Junior Sprints. These are followed at 10.30 a.m. by the Junior Challenge for the Leonard Cup; at 11 a.m. by the Intermedia­tes race for the Cleary Cup; at 11 a.m. the youths will vie for the Cleary/O’Neill Cup, and lastly at noon the seniors will race for the Sean Kelly Memorial cup.
