HORSE SHOW

The show date of Saturday, July 22, is getting very close and plans have just finalised for a very exciting programme. Riders are requested to do a show check on kilmacanoguehorseshow. com where the programme will be posted very soon. It’s almost time to start getting your ponies, horses and dogs at the ready, or if you’re a much appreciated supporter of the show, to mark the date in the calendar for a day of fun-filled activities where all the proceeds go to charity. So what’s new for this year?

To accommodate the young and old of all riding ability at this year’s show, the committee have two Rings where they are running Working Hunter and Performance Hunter Classes. Both of these classes involve natural rustic fences. In one ring, they will have Working Hunter competitions for the rider who enjoys jumping – but only over small fences.

Competitions in this Ring will start at 10 a.m. with fences kept to a maximum height of 60cms. While most people could jump this on their own, it’s much better fun doing this course of fences in partnership with a horse. Two later competitions in this ring will involve fences at 70cm and finally at 80cm.

In the second Ring, they are running Performance Hunter competitions at the usual high standard starting off with rustic

Last week in Ballybawn Cottages, an attempted robbery of a house was foiled thanks to a vigilent neighbour and Bray Garda. While the occupant of the house was in his back garden, three suspects gained access to the premises and locked the back door. However, a vigilant and good neighbour spotted the unusual activity and phoned the Gardaí who were on the scene very quickly and caught the three men in their car as they they tried to escape.

We all are aware of how Garda resources have been cut over the years but lets also give credit to the force on catching the culprits so quickly, well done to all. Remember, be aware and if you see unusual activity in your area, phone the Gardaí at 01 6665300.

MUSIC IN CALARY

The next concert of the 2017 series takes place this Sunday (25th) when the Delmaine String Quartet together with Michael James Ford, Gary Jermyn and Susannah De Wrixon will present ‘The Waterloo Concert’ with music, song, poetry and prose reflecting the great battle. It will incorporate works by Shostakovich, Beethoven and Schubert alongside pieces composed by the Duke’s own father, Garret Wellesley, who was the first professor of music at Trinity College.

As this concert is being held to raise much needed funds to support Sister Mary Killeen’s work for street children in the slums of Nairobi, there is the option of a supper in the church room before the concert starts. The supper will begin at 6 p.m. and the concert will start at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the supper and concert are €40 while those for the concert on its own are €18 and €15 for concessions. To book tickets, please ring John at 01 2818146 or email derekneilson@ eircom.net.

CORPUS CHRISTI MASS

The children of Kilmacanogue NS sixth and second classes attended the Corpus Christi Mass in St Mochonóg’s as a follow up to their recent Confirmation and First Holy Communion sacraments. Members of the second class group opened the Mass with a procession up to the altar which they then prepared for the Mass.

A patchwork dove made by sixth class was brought up by Caitlyn and Maria and presented a Eucharistic candle as symbols of the children’s’ reflections on their sacraments. Sixth class also did the readings and Prayers of the Faithful were read beautifully by members of second class.

Offertory gifts were brought up by parents from second class and the two classes sang together throughout this celebration. One of the girls from sixth class even read out a Communion Reflection, before the two classes gathered on the Altar for their group photo. Father David then led the children in a ceremonial procession from the Altar.

This celebration Mass combining the First Holy Communion and the Confirmation groups is quickly becoming a beautiful tradition in our parish. Special thanks are due to Máiréad Murphy, who has worked with the two classes throughout the year and Breda Connolly, who organised the refreshments in the Parish Hall afterwards. Most of all though, a big thank you must go to the parents and the children who came along in their outfits from their special day.

PRINCIPAL RETIRES

We all know of the great service Geraldine Kelly has given Kilmacanogue National School both as a teacher and then Principal. Well Geraldine has reached retirement age and will step down as Principal during the school holidays in August.

Geraldine and her staff had a wonderful night out last Friday in Glenmalure to celebrate her retirement but to mark the occasion for us all, the School parents’ association would like to invite all past parents and pupils to a reception which will take place next week in Kilmacanogue National School on Thursday, June 29, at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome so please put the date in your Diary.

GAA DINNER DANCE

Everyone involved with Kilmacanogue GAA Club would like to thank the close to 200 people who attended a beautiful four course meal at the dinner dance recently in the Parkview Hotel.

Club chairman Mark Quinn presided over proceeding on the night with the ‘Quiet Man’ himself Peadar Smyth called upon on as club chairman in 1997 to oversee the presentation ceremony. Gerry Blackbyrne and Paddy O’Brien presented plaques to the 97 junior A winning panel while Dermot Murphy presented medals to the ladies’ team of 1996. Dermot also spoke passionately of how much he enjoyed working with this team just over 20 years ago. Mark Quinn then presented the 2016 division two winning team with their medals.

The club would also like to thank everyone who supported the auction and the following people who bought items: Paul Prendergast, Greg O’Donnell, Chris Masterson, Carol Cassidy, Gerry Blackbyrne, Andrew Molloy, Wes Callaghan and Jonathan Daniels, Gavin Burke and Robbie Draper.

As all were aware before the dinner dance, all money raised on the night went towards the building of the new clubhouse. Mark Quinn displayed photos of the new building and paid great thanks the project management committee of John Flynn, Ryan Lavery and Andrew Molloy, who have worked tirelessly to get building to the stage it is at today. It is expected the roof of the new building will be installed by the end of July and the building will be moving towards being watertight.

Finally, none of this wonderful evening would not have been possible without the hard work of Melanie Lee, Judy O’Toole, Claire Redden, Joy Burke, Stephen Rooney, Peadar Smyth, Jason Doyle and Mark Quinn, well done to everyone.
