TRIATHLETES TO TACKLE WICKLOW HARBOURMAN

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

ATHLETES of all capabilities are expected to flock to Wicklow town this Sunday for the second Harbourman triathlon.

Organised by Wicklow Triathlon Club, it is an Olympic-distance race comprising of a 1500m open-water sea swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run.

The inaugural event in 2016 saw over 500 competitors take on the challenge.

This Sunday, July 9, participants will undertake two 750m laps of Wicklow Harbour before embarking on the cycle. The out-and-back route will head up the Port Road towards Rathnew, before heading for The Beehive pub where racers will follow the old N11 road south before turning around near Jack White’s Inn.

The last stage is the 10km run, which will see competitors run out the Port Road for 2km before turning back the way they came. They will continue past the transition zone, cross the cycling path past the Leitrim Lounge and run over the bridge onto the South Quays. The route continues on to the lighthouse and the steps to the Black Castle then turns down Quarantine Hill and back onto the South Quays as far as the junction with Bridge Street.

Entry to the Harbourman triathlon has now closed. However, those who have entered will need to complete the registration process before the race.

This can be done before the race on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Assembly Hall in Wicklow town or at event sponsor Base 2 Race in Ballymount in Dublin from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The event is expected to get under way around 1.30 p.m., with the first finishers expected to cross the line some time after 3.30 p.m.

It is hoped there will be plenty of supporters out to cheer them over the finish line.

A number of roads will be closed for a time on Sunday to facilitate the hosting of the Harbourman triathlon.

Both the Port Road (L1101), from Drumkay to Bridge Street, and Bridge Street (L1700) to Fitzwilliam Square will be closed from 11.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
